Shelach | Send Thou | שְׁלַח

Shelach means “send forth.” Moses sends twelve spies into the land of Canaan. Ten return with an evil report, but Caleb and Joshua encourage obedience. Israel mourns, refusing to enter the land. HaShem decrees forty years of wandering. Some attempt to enter Canaan but find only defeat. God outlines meal and drink offerings, portions of challah (dough), and atonement for unintentional sin. An Israelite is stoned for gathering wood on Shabbat. HaShem commands Israelite men to wear tzitzit as a reminder of the commandments.
