Financial Health in the Kingdom, Part 1

Financial Health in the Kingdom, Part 1

Did you know that there is a connection between healing and building Kingdom wealth? Many Believers are in financial crisis because there is little understanding of what God says about stewarding money.

The issue is deeper than money management, though that’s a significant part of the problem. The root cause is often connected to a broken past–the patterns, agreements, and identity crisis buried beneath the surface

These must be addressed first. God wants wholeness for you, mind, body, and spirit. This impacts every aspect of your life, including your finances.

What Is Standing in My Way?

We have all been hurt, bitter, resentful, and angry at one time or another. Those hurts in our hearts plant seeds of bitterness that will eventually impact multiple areas of our lives.

“A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, and a bad tree cannot bear good fruit.” —Matthew 7:18

When we harbor:

  • Unforgiveness
  • Doubt
  • Anger
  • Bitterness

… it affects the way we live, including how we spend money. Overspending is not always connected to greed for more, but to the need to fill a void that has not been properly addressed.

Living with a scarcity mindset isn’t just about the lack in our lives, but also about what we believe about God and our true identity. God wants to be invited into every part of your life, and He needs to be for you to be healed and to be an agent of healing for others.

Your Heart & Seeking God’s Kingdom First

In Matthew 6, Jesus is addressing a large crowd in one of the most famous sermons in history: the Sermon on the Mount. He addresses many issues through countercultural ideas and Heaven’s perspective on earthly problems, including wealth.

Speaking of wealth, He says to build up for yourselves treasures in heaven, rather than on earth. Why? “Because where you treasure is, there your heart will be also.” (Matthew 6:19-21)

He further explains that we cannot serve two masters: God and money (Matthew 6:24). He says not to worry about material things, but to seek God’s Kingdom and His righteousness first, and to trust that all our needs will be met (Matthew 6:25-33).

This counters everything the world says about money. The world tells you to store up for yourself as much as you can, worry and strive, and climb higher and higher. For most, money is the world’s god–whether they have much or little.

Jesus never said money is the problem, but rather the posture of our hearts. Jesus wants to bless you, including with financial provision, but if that blessing becomes an idol, it will destroy you.

That’s why He mercifully calls us to put our eyes on Him and His Kingdom. Stop obsessing and worrying about our needs. Seek to bless His work and partner with what matters to Him. Then, He will provide what we need–and often not just enough, but more than enough. God wants to bless you so you can be a blessing to others.

As Paul spoke in 2 Corinthians 9:11, “You will be enriched in every way to be generous in every way, which through us will produce thanksgiving to God.” (emphasis added)

Building Kingdom Wealth Starts with You

Kingdom wealth is not about being rich as the world might define it. It’s about having resources to build up and bless God’s House in His mission to rescue humanity. He is generous. He is abundant. He wants you to have more than enough so you can partner with Him and His Kingdom! But it starts with a choice to do things His way.

How we live reveals how we think, which is determined by what we believe 100% of the time. The choices we make reveal our agreements. When getting to the root of what’s blocking your finances, consider:

  • Have I consecrated my bank account to the Father?
  • Do I have the desire to invest in what is good, praiseworthy, and true?
  • Do I believe He owns the cattle on a thousand hills, and that He desires to care for me?
  • Do I acknowledge that my choices matter, and will I take responsibility for my own actions?
  • Will I trust God, be obedient, and remember all wealth entrusted to me still belongs to Him?

As with every part of our lives, blockages stem from issues of the heart. God wants to bless you, but He is testing your heart. As you are faithful with little, He will give you more. He’s a good Father and knows what you’re ready for, what pitfalls are up ahead, and how to avoid them.

Trust His timing, listen to His voice, and receive the abundant life He offers– a life abundant because He is the source of your provision, joy, and delight.
